Halloween Break at Waterford city

Goblins, Ghouls and Family Fun

As summer comes to a close, and the school year begins, there will be sad faces all round. Those sad faces will soon change into scary faces as Halloween is just around the corner.

Some traditions believe that Halloween, or as it was called in olden times “All Hallows Eve” is the one day a year the dead can walk the earth freely and the night that magic can be used. It is the night when we gather round to watch scary movies, tell ghost stories and scare the living daylights out of someone! It wouldn’t be Halloween without dressing up like the Grim Reaper, a Disney Princess or your standard Vampire or Witch, go trick or treating, and having the kids running up the walls on a sugar rush.

Apart from goblins, ghouls and magic tricks, the Halloween Break is a great time for families to take a trip away and celebrate this supernatural holiday. And luckily enough, Waterford has an array of activities for families and friends to partake in, to break up those few months between the start of the school year and the Christmas holidays. So what’s going on in Waterford this year you say? We´re glad you asked…

The House of Horrors is sure to get you weak at the knees and frozen with fear. Comprising of a volunteer cast & crew in excess of 100 individuals and with a tour area of 10,000 sq ft. this event is guaranteed to provide thrills, scares & laughter in equal measure. But don’t worry, there are daytime shows for the kids which are fun and not-so-scary, and night-time shows for adults, which are absolutely terrifying (you have been warned)!

Looking for activities for the whole family? Then why not hop on board the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway’s Spooky Express which runs along the spooky railway track and has child-friendly stories about fairies and princesses, dragons, and trolls.

Treacys Hotel also runs a Kids Club over the Halloween Mid Term where the kids can do some Halloween Arts and Crafts, get dressed up to go trick-or-treating and finish the evening with a Halloween disco. This is a huge hit with the kids and lets the parents relax for a frighteningly quiet meal at our Crokers restaurant or enjoy a drink at Timbertoes bar.

The Imagine Arts Festival also takes place at the end of October which is an interesting event for those of you are not bringing the kids along. Each year Imagine Arts Festival strives to present an exciting, eclectic and diverse range of artistic events which include theatre, music, comedy. This festival is prominently led by volunteers and is based around the city. Showing local and international artists’ talents and creativity, we would highly recommend it if you are excited about art.

This autumn has a lot going on and there is never a dull moment while waiting for the return of Christmas.

With all the activities happening in Waterford city in autumn, there is no slump from summer to winter. Whether it be for culture, family, history, heritage, or just a nice breakaway, Waterford has something to offer everyone this time of year as you will be thoroughly entertained throughout this season.
