When you think of Festivals in Ireland, you usually think of the big ones like the famous Electric Picnic, Longitude, Indiependence, Life Fest, Body & Soul and so on and so on. But, what if I told you that you wouldn’t have to leave Waterford for that exhilarating festival feeling that you all crave?
Well, it’s true! Waterford is an exciting hub of entertainment, music, food and street art over the summer months with many Festivals to choose from. An electricity runs through this ancient city creating an atmosphere that we desire and dream of when we think of the word “festival”. Whatever your plans are this summer, whether discovering Ireland’s Ancient East, Cycling the Waterford Greenway or simply having a city break away, I highly recommend you to fit one of these incredible Festivals into your schedule this summer.
Daytripper is the first of the big Waterford Festivals of the summer with acts such as the amazing Ocean Colour Scene (I’m a bit of a Fan), Aslan, Paul Young, Stereo MCs, and Rebel Rebel which is a fantastic Tribute to the late David Bowie (I’m also a huge fan). The festival will take place at the Regional Sports Centre on the Cork Road (only 10 minutes from Treacys Hotel) on the 1st 2nd and 3rd of July 2016. It welcomes music fans from the South East and beyond into Waterford for 3 days of top quality entertainment, with music for all tastes.
Waterford Spraoi International Street Arts Festival is up next on the 29th – 31st of July with an abundance of contemporary culture and entertainment transforming the streets of this beautiful, ancient city into a wonder of imagination and creativity. The highlight of the festival is the annual Spraoi Parade, where hundreds of locals parade through the city’s medieval streets at night, dressed in exotic costumes. The accompaniment of magnificent floats, live music, lighting, and special effects make it a night to remember. This stunning spectacle concludes with fireworks launched from the River Suir which runs through the city.
Waterford Walls Festival 2016 will transform this ancient city into an open-air Art Gallery, as 25 derelict sites become canvases for international and national street artists. A range of events will run over three days from 26th – 28th of August which will make this city a vibrant and cultural stage for visitors and locals to admire. There will also be workshops running for all ages by some of the artists themselves, as well as indoor and outdoor music taking place right across the city.
And now one for all you food lovers out there, Waterford Harvest Festival returns for 3 eventful days of everything to do with FOOD! It is time to celebrate the crop with the best of local food, heritage, and culture of Ireland’s Ancient East. Producers and food enthusiasts will be showcasing all the gastronomic delights the region has to offer with cooking demonstrations, markets, and picnics. This festival is not to be missed if you are as crazy about food as I am. So put it in our calendar, September 9th-11th, you’ll thank me later!
