House of Waterford Crystal

Located on the Mall, the House of Waterford Crystal is situated in the heart of Waterford City’s Viking Triangle

The staff will be waiting to welcome you on arrival and will take you on a full guided tour to see some of the amazing pieces of craft available. You will even get to see some pieces in creation, right before your very eyes.

In 1783, the Penrose’s, George, and William petitioned Parliament for aid to establish the manufacturing of flint glass in Waterford glasshouse. This was successful, and they began manufacturing in Waterford City on 3rd October 1783.

The following year, the Penrose’s were manufacturing all kinds of useful and ornamental flint glass, like great quality as anywhere in Europe at that time. They had a considerable amount of the best craftsmen, blowers, cutters and engravers employed. In that time, it had cost the Penrose family £10,000 to build and fit out the factory, which when it first opened, was employing 50 to 70 workers.

Embark on a factory tour of the House of Waterford Crystal, and get up close and personal to the amazing precision and skill these workers have. (Imagine the heartbreak of sneezing whilst in the middle of engraving a one-off piece of art?)

Watch as the glass is heated, shaped, cut, and moulded in front of you and down the line witness a master engraver at work.

The atmosphere is hardworking and friendly; it’s a wonderful thing to experience first-hand.

After your tour, head to the café for a bite to eat, or have a look at the retail store where you can find amazing and one-off pieces of Waterford Crystal. (Wedding gift idea, perhaps?)
